SHODO is the way of Japanese calligraphy.
At SAKURA Studio, step into the peaceful and elegant world of SHODO, Japanese brush calligraphy.
This 60-minute cultural experience welcomes both beginners and calligraphy lovers.
書道 ― それは、筆に心を託し、静けさの中に美を見いだす日本の芸術。
ATELIER SAKURAでは、喧騒を離れ、穏やかで凛とした書の世界へとご案内いたします。
およそ60分、初心者の方も経験者の方も、心静かに筆と向き合う時間をお楽しみください。
1. Introduction to SHODO Tools
We begin with an introduction to the essential tools of SHODO:
– Brush (筆 fude)
– Ink (墨 sumi)
– Inkstone (硯 suzuri)
– Japanese paper (半紙 hanshi)
– Paperweight (文鎮 bunchin)
まずは、お道具と出会うところから始まります。
様々な種類のお道具を手に取ってみてください。
2. Choose Your Kanji or Phrase
Choose a meaningful word you’d like to write—such as:
– 「桜」(sakura – cherry blossom)
– 「愛」(ai – love)
– 「侍」(samurai – samurai)
あなたの心に響く一文字を選びましょう。
どの一文字にも、書く人の思いが宿ります。
3. Brush Holding & Posture
Learn how to hold the brush correctly and sit in a relaxed posture.
This foundation helps create elegant strokes and calm focus.
筆を正しく持ち、背筋をすっと伸ばし、息を整えていきます。
静かな集中の中で、筆先が自然に紙をすべる感覚を味わってください。
一線一線が、心の動きを映す瞬間となります。
4. Basic Stroke Practice
Practice basic strokes—dots, lines, curves—on practice paper.
Feel the gentle rhythm and breathing of SHODO through each brush movement.
点、線、曲線――
単純な動きの中にも、無限の美があります。
筆が紙をはしる音、墨の香り、呼吸のリズム。
そのすべてが「書く瞑想」となって、心を穏やかにしてくれます。
5. Live Demonstration by Calligrapher
Watch as a professional calligrapher writes your chosen word in front of you.
Observe the balance, flow, and artistry of each stroke.
書家が目の前で筆をはしらせます。
筆ならではの線の強さとしなやかさ、
墨の濃淡、空間の美。
そこに日本の美意識と、一瞬の芸術が息づきます。
6. Practice Your Word
Now try writing your word several times with gentle guidance from the instructor.
いよいよ自らの手で筆をとり、選んだ文字を書いてみましょう。
7. Final Artwork & Photo Time
Create your final work on high-quality Japanese paper—or optionally on a handcrafted fan.
After completing your masterpiece, enjoy a photo session to capture the memory of your unique Japanese calligraphy experience.
Take home both your artwork and wonderful photos as keepsakes of your time in Japan.

仕上がった作品を手に、旅の記念となる一枚の写真を。
