郡山直先生に感謝を込めて

日本の英文詩の第一人者の
東洋大学文学部名誉教授・郡山直先生に
賢治の詩を英訳して頂くことが出来ました。

先生の英文詩は英語圏の国々の小、中、高の教科書二十六点に掲載され、
“世界詩人会議”に日本の代表として出席される方です。

先生に英訳して頂いた１２の賢治の詩は、
林風舎・宮澤和樹氏を通じて、
宮澤賢治記念館に寄贈させて頂きました。

和樹氏のお父様でいらっしゃいます、
当時の宮澤賢治記念館の宮澤雄造館長から

『英訳文書は当館では資料としまして、
正式にお引き受け致します。』との丁重なお手紙を頂きました。
　
素晴らし方々との出会いに心から感謝をしております。

In the sky , birds scatter like dust ;
heat waves like the Greek alphabet blaze a busy blue
upon the snow –covered fields .
From Japanese cypresses along Passen Highway ,
brilliant , frozen droplets fall , shining bright .
This morning , the distant signals from Milky Way Railroad Station
are a red blur .
While the river is briskly pushing down broken ice-patches ,
rubber-booted people wear fox or dog furs ,
browsing through stalls of chinaware vendors ,
inspecting suspended octopuses .
It’s Tsuchizawa’s bustling market-days .
( The alder trees and blindingly bright alcohol clouds .
Over there , a mistletoe’s golden goal may well shine vividly . )
Ah , winter’s light-weighted , Milky Way locomotive
conducted by Josef Pasternack ,
plows its way through the many layers of fine snow
( beneath the red insulators of utility poles and pine woods ) ,
carrying a ‘ false gold ‘ in its fixed-open , brown-eyed face ,
rushing onward against the cold , blue dome of the sky –
across the bright snow-covered highlands
( and the fern-like ice on the train windows evaporates
into white steam . )
From the Japanese cypresses along Passen Highway
Brilliant droplets fall over , burning bright in the sun .
Like the bustling businesses in the marketplace ,
green boughs spring up amidst a spectra of rubies and topaz all aglow .
